Friends of Scona Rec's First Meeting

By Aurnir - Posted on 20 January 2016

The City of Edmonton is redeveloping Rollie Miles Athletic Park. This is a district park, serving a population of about 40,000 Edmontonians. For context, the combined population of Strathcona, Garneau, McKernan, Belgravia, Parkallen, Queen Alexandra and Allendale is approximately 35,000. We are talking about serving a fairly localized area, accessible by many via active or public transportation. Rollie Miles Athletic Park includes amenities such as Scona Pool, the track, Southside Arena and tennis courts.

Previously, through Friends of Scona Pool, we collectively showed the City keeping Scona Pool open is important to us. We increased pool usage, held special events and raised funds to renovate the party room. We were positive and took ownership over the problem. We did it once, and we can do it again.

Friends of Scona Pool has now been renamed Friends of Scona Rec to maintain our advocacy for an aquatic facility as part of the Rollie Miles Park Redevelopment, but be more inclusive of other recreation opportunities on the site.

Friends of Scona Rec's first official meeting will be on Tuesday Jan 26th from 7-8:30pm at Queen Alex Community League Hall. Please RSVP if you are able to attend just so we know how many people to expect.

An agenda will be sent out before the meeting but key items for discussion will include:

terms of reference
reaching out to other Rollie Miles users
update on City project engagement
Looking forward to seeing you all!
