Digital Literacy for Kids - Spring 2019

The QACL Digital Literacy Workshop will help kids to gain a better grasp of the technology surrounding us by using educational robots to have some fun with physical computing. The class will be held on Thursday afternoons, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm at QACL Hall. During eight weeks of classes, between April 18 and June 6, kids will build and program a robot to take home.

Programming will be in a visual implementation of the “C” programming language. Motivated kids from grades 4-6 are welcome. They will require very basic reading and math skills and will need to bring their own laptop (Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook are all OK as long as they have a USB2 port). If your child does not have access to a laptop but wishes to attend, please contact Kristof, as we do not want this to be a barrier to participation.

Class Dates (subject to change)

  • April 18, 25
  • May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
  • June 6

The cost of the 8 sessions is $40 and can be paid at the first class. To register, families must have a valid community league membership card. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

Community League volunteer Kristof Bostoen has kindly offered to teach a digital literacy class for kids in grades 4-6 at the Queen Alexandra Community League hall this fall. Kristof runs a similar program at some area schools, as well as at Ronald McDonald House. He highly encourages both girls and boys to explore computing.
